The City of San Diego is not one landscaping market. Coastal salt and wind, historic small-lot blocks with tired old lawns, postwar tract mesas on original 1950s irrigation, and hot east-county blocks with real brush clearance each call for a different approach. Here is how we work each part of the city.
Salt-tolerant palettes and wind-firmed plantings on small coastal lots.
Salt spray and onshore wind are the defining factors on the immediate coast. Salt burns tender foliage, wind desiccates new plantings, and marine-layer mornings hold moisture into midday. Rainfall is low and the cooling load on plants is mild most of the year.
Drought conversions and irrigation retrofits on newer marine-zone stock.
The marine layer still reaches here so summers stay mild, but afternoons run a few degrees warmer than the beachfront and late-summer heat is real. Rainfall is low and most homes carry existing irrigation from the build era.
Small-lot drought conversions and mature-tree care on historic blocks.
The mesa climate is mild, but the housing is old and the lots are small. Most homes date to the 1910s through 1940s, came in with thirsty fescue or kikuyu lawns and original spray irrigation, and carry mature street trees that now shade and root-compete with the yard.
1950s-60s tract lawn conversions with full irrigation overhauls.
These mesas sit just far enough from the coast to lose the marine cooling by mid-afternoon, so the summer stress on plants is real without being extreme. The housing is postwar tract from the 1950s and 1960s on flatter, more uniform lots.
East-county drought design, fire-clearance, and canyon slope work.
East of the coastal buffer, summer runs eight to twelve degrees hotter than the beaches, rainfall is lower, and many blocks back up to open-space canyons. Water restrictions bite harder here and fire season is a genuine planning factor on the canyon-edge lots.
