Hardscape

Retaining walls and hardscaping across San Diego County.

SD hills mean retaining walls. Rocky, expansive clay soils mean they have to be built right. We handle block walls (Keystone, Anchor, Belgard), paver walkways, flagstone patios, and dry-stack stone accents, with the drainage, base prep, and compaction that keeps them from blowing out in year three.

What do homeowners ask about hardscaping?

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?

Most SD jurisdictions allow walls up to 3 ft (measured from bottom of footing to top of wall) without a permit. Taller than 3 ft, or any wall retaining a surcharge (driveway, pool deck, structure above), needs an engineer stamp and permit. We tell you up front which side of the line your project is on.

How long do block retaining walls last in SD soil?

30+ years when built right. The failures we see are almost always three things: no drainage behind the wall, insufficient base prep (sitting on loose soil), or no geogrid on taller walls. We spec all three for anything over 2 ft.

What about concrete vs. pavers for a patio?

Concrete is cheaper up front ($8-$14/sq ft installed) and fails by cracking in year 10-15, hard to repair cleanly. Pavers cost more ($18-$28/sq ft) but if one cracks you pull it and replace it for $15. Pavers also handle SD clay heave better because they move as a system. For most customers, pavers win on 15-year total cost.

Can you work on a steep slope?

Up to about 3:1 slopes, yes, with access for equipment. Steeper than that, or hillside lots without truck access, we subcontract or refer out. We walk the site first and tell you honestly.

Do you match existing hardscape (pool deck, driveway)?

Yes, we pull samples and match color family and texture where possible. Exact manufacturer-match on older installs is sometimes impossible but we get very close.
