How often should SD hedges be trimmed?
Formal hedges (boxwood, privet, cypress) want 2-3 shapings per year: late spring after flush, mid-summer, and a light touch in fall. Ornamentals get 1-2 prunes per year. Ficus needs selective thinning every 6-8 months, sheared ficus goes brown inside fast in our sun.
Can you bring an overgrown hedge back to size?
Often yes, but it takes time. Boxwood and privet tolerate hard prunes. Ficus usually comes back from a big reduction. Italian cypress does not, once it browns inside, that side stays brown. We will tell you honestly which hedges on your property will rebound and which are better replaced.
Do you haul away the clippings?
Yes, every time. No tarped piles left on the lawn, no dumping in the green bin. We truck everything out as part of the flat rate.
What time of year should I avoid trimming?
Avoid heavy trimming on young plants in August-September heat, they struggle to recover. Avoid any rose prune in May. Don't shear fuchsia-type flowering shrubs during bloom. We adjust timing to the plant, not the calendar.
Can you trim palm trees or large trees?
Small date palms and queen palms under 15 feet, yes. Anything taller, especially Washingtonia or phoenix palms needing climb-and-skin work, is tree-service territory and we'll refer you to Branch Pro San Diego.
