One head throwing water sideways instead of in an arc doesn’t always mean a new part. Sometimes a clogged nozzle explains the whole problem. When cleaning or adjustment may solve the problem
Debris is the most common cause of a head that looks broken but isn’t. Sand, mulch, or grass clippings lodge in the nozzle and distort the spray. Pull the nozzle off (most pop-up nozzles twist or pull free by hand) and rinse it under a faucet, then check the filter screen just below it, which also clogs with the same debris and restricts flow even when the nozzle itself is clear.
A head that pops up but sprays the wrong shape often just needs the arc adjusted with a small flathead screwdriver at the top of the nozzle, turning it to the marked degree setting rather than replacing anything. A head that’s sunk into the lawn because the surrounding soil settled can sometimes be raised by digging around the body and packing soil underneath it, no new parts required.
If the head pops up, holds its position, and sprays a clean pattern once cleaned and adjusted, the repair is done. If it still leaks at the base, sprays weakly with the nozzle clear, or won’t retract when the zone shuts off, the internal parts are worn out and cleaning won’t fix it.
When the head or riser needs replacement
A cracked head body, a stripped thread where it connects to the riser, or a spring that no longer pulls the head back down all call for replacement rather than repair. These are wear parts, and on most residential systems a full pop-up head assembly is inexpensive enough that swapping it takes less time than diagnosing every internal component separately.
Riser damage is its own category. A snapped riser, usually from a lawnmower strike or foot traffic, means the head has nothing solid to sit on even if the head itself is fine. Everything above assumes the problem stops at the head and riser. It doesn’t always. If water surfaces in the soil away from the head, or a zone loses pressure across every head at once, the lateral pipe feeding that zone may be cracked or separated underground, often from root growth, ground settling, or a past excavation nearby.
That changes the scope from a swap-and-go repair to digging, cutting, and rejoining pipe, and it changes who should be doing the work.
